Plastic Surgery

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery encompasses several subspecialties.

The subspecialty that is much reported in the media is Aesthetic (cosmetic) Surgery. This can sometimes overshadow other subspecialties, within Plastic Surgery, which receive less media attention. These include:

• Breast Surgery - reconstructive.

• Burns Surgery - emergency surgery, and secondary reconstruction.

• Cleft & Craniofacial Surgery

• Hand Surgery - congenital, acquired, and traumatic conditions.

• Head & Neck Surgery - head and neck cancer excision and reconstruction, including facial reanimation.

• Microsurgery - this overlaps with reconstructive aspects of other subspecialties and involves dissection/repair of small arteries, veins and nerves.

• Skin Cancers - also, management of benign and pre-malignant skin lesions and subcutaneous lesions.

• Trauma - craniofacial trauma, hand trauma, as well as complex wounds in any anatomical area requiring complex reconstruction.

The aesthetic (cosmetic) skills of Plastic Surgeons tend to complement the reconstructive skills, and vice versa, as they frequently reconstruct areas which are often the focus of aesthetic surgery.

Mr Khan is Consultant Surgeon in Burns and Plastic Surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.His special interests are breast reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. Mr Khan carries out liposuction, facial rejuvenations, facelift, blepharoplasty, skin lesions, carpal tunnel release and post burns reconstruction.

Mr Declan A. Lannon MB BCh BAO, FRCSI, MSc, FEBOPRAS, FRCS(Plast)

Mr. Lannon is a Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon for the Northern Ireland Plastic & Maxillofacial Service, based in the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, with clinics in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

 

He is registered with the UK’s General Medical Council with a licence to practise. He holds specialist registration in Plastic Surgery. He graduated from University College Dublin’s Medical School, following which he completed Medical & Surgical Internships, and then Pre-Fellowship Surgical training leading to the award of Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Mr. Lannon also completed a Masters in Surgical Science at University College London prior to commencing his Higher Surgical Training in Plastic Surgery. He has been extensively trained in Plastic Surgery in London, Dublin, Cork, Galway, & Toronto. He was successful at both the U.K. Intercollegiate Specialty Board examination in Plastic Surgery, and the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery examination, leading to FRCS(Plast) and FEBOPRAS respectively. He completed three years of Subspecialty Fellowship Training in Reconstructive Microsurgery, Plastic Surgery Trauma & Oncology, Adult Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, and Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Surgery at the world renowned Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Toronto.

He has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed plastic surgery journals, and has authored several book chapters in plastic surgery text books.
