Aortic Aneurysm Screening
Aortic Aneurysm Screening may reduce deaths through early detection.
Aortic aneurysms often grow slowly and usually without symptoms, making them difficult to detect. Thankfully some aneurysms will never rupture and simply need to have regular screening. If you have any of the risk factors or symptoms below an Aortic Aneurysm Screening examination can be booked for you at 3fivetwo.
As an abdominal aortic aneurysm grows, some people may notice the symptoms below and should alert a doctor immediately:
- A pulsating feeling near the front abdominal wall
- Tenderness or pain in the abdomen or chest
- General unexplained back pain
The principle risk factors include:
- Age- 60+yrs
- High blood pressure
- Smokers - Those who have smoked at some stage during their life
- Family history
- Atherosclerosis
- Sex - Males are up to 10 times more likely to develop aortic aneurysms than females
- Ethnicity - more common in the Caucasian (white) population
Abdominal ultrasound is used to measure the width of the aorta and ensure that there are no areas of concern. A CT scan may also be requested.
