Endoscopy

An endoscopy is a procedure which involves inserting an endoscope (a thin, long, flexible tube that contains a light source and is connected to a video camera) into the body through a natural opening, such as your throat or recdtum to allow internal examination of the gastrointestinal tract.

The procedure is normally carried out when you're awake, and you may be given a sedative to relax you.Endoscopes are used mainly as a diagnostic tool, though there are some specially adapted endoscopes that can be used to treat certain conditions, such as gallstones.

Gastroscopy

An upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, usually known simply as gastroscopy, can be used to both diagnose and treat problems affecting your upper GI tract. This includes your oesophagus (gullet), stomach and duodenum (the first section of your small intestine). It is used to diagnose:

  • Peptic ulcers.
  • Non-ulcer dyspepsia (indigestion that's not caused by an ulcer).
  • Damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD), when stomach acid comes back up your oesophagus or gullet.
  • Cancer of the stomach or oesophagus.

Colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy

Colonoscopy is a test that allows your physicain or surgeon to look directly at the lining of the large intestine (the colon). It is recommended for alterations in bowel habit, occult or frank blood in the stool, unexplained anaemia and as a screening tool for colon cancer.

During the examination an endoscope is passed carefully through the anus into the intestine to permit examination of the lining of the colon. A biopsy ( a sample of the lining of the bowel for closer inspection under microscope) may be performed. A small piece of tissue is removed painlessly through the endocsope using tiny biopsy forceps.

ERCP(Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography)

ERCP combines the use of endoscopy and x-rays. It is used mainly to diagnose and treat conditions that affect the bile ducts and nearby structures. For example, gallstones, strictures (narrowings), leaks, and certain cancers.

We have a team of locally based Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatobilary Surgeons who can deliver an examination, diagnosis and ultimately treatment of conditions in the oesophagus, stomach, large and small intestines (bowel) and biliary system.

They offer the following diagnostic services:

  • Oesophageal-gastric-duodenal Endoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Abdominal Ultrasound and CT scanning
  • Virtual Colonoscopy using low dose Computed Tomography (CT)
  • ERCP
