Cardiac CT Imaging
Cardiac CT is an imaging test that uses CT technology to visualise the heart anatomy, coronary circulation, and great vessels.
There are two types of CT scans used in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD):
- Calcium-scoring
- Coronary CT angiography (CTA)
Calcium-Scoring
Calcium-scoring is a fast, non-invasive examination used to detect the presence and amount of calcium deposits or plaque build up in the coronary arteries. It is considered the most effective way of detecting early coronary artery calcification from atherosclerosis, before symptoms develop.
The amount of coronary calcium has been recognised as a powerful independent predictor of future cardiac events and may be used to guide lifestyle modifications and preventive medical therapies to reduce this risk.
A calcium-scoring scan takes only a few minutes to perform and is carried out routinely as part of a coronary CT scan, but may also be requested as a stand alone examination.
Coronary CT Angiography (CTA)
Coronary CTA has evolved as a fast and effective cardiac diagnostic tool. It produces high-resolution, 3-dimensional pictures of the moving heart and great vessels allowing non-invasive evaluation of the presence and extent of both fatty and calcium deposits or plaque build up in the coronary arteries.
