Cardiac Event Monitoring
Cardiac event monitoring is used to correlate your symptoms and diagnose abnormal heart rhythms.
Symptoms such as dizziness, palpatations, shortness of breath, fainting spells and chest pain have many different possible causes, which may or may not be related to heart rhythm. Heartbeats that are too fast or too slow may cause light headedness or fainting. However, these irregular heart beats may not last long enough to show up on an electrocadiograph (ECG). Cardiac event monitoring helps to find the cause of a rhythm problem, particularly if it does not happen on a regular basis.
Cardiac event monitors/ Holter monitors are portable devices for continuosly monitoring the electrical activity of the heart for 24 hours or more. There are different kinds of event monitors. They may be carried in a purse or pocket or worn like a beeper. They may be attached to your chest using wires and adhesive patches and you must carry them with you at all times ranging from 24hours to up to 2 weeks.
During the time that you wear the monitor, you should keep up your normal activities. When you have symptoms, you turn on the monitor, which records your heart rhythm before, during and after the event.
