Obstetric Ultrasound
A routine part of your 3fivetwo antenatal care package includes an extensive ultrasound service. This will include an early pregnancy scan, nuchal scan, detailed normality scan and fetal cardiac scan (carried out by Consultant cardiologist Dr F Casey). 4D ultrasound is also available.
Early pregnancy Scan: performed at 8-10 weeks
This scan will help determine the presence of a heartbeat, multiple embryos and indicate gestational age. If your Obstetrician is concerned about a possible ectopic pregnancy or in the very early stages of pregnancy, a trans-vaginal scan may be carried out from 6 weeks. Preparation: Please attend your appointment with a full bladder, to improve image quality.
Nuchal Translucency Scan: performed at 11 weeks - 13 weeks
Provides more detailed information including measurement of the ‘nuchal fold’ or ‘nuchal translucency’ which are used as indicators for the presence of Down's syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. Another indicator for Down's syndrome can be a small or abscent nasal bone. The results from the scan are then correlated with data from Kings College Hospital to provide your individual risk.
You may then be offered CVS (chorionic villous sample) at 12 weeks, or an amniocentesis at 16 weeks. These tests are invasive, but provide definitive information about the presence of fetal abnormality.
Detailed Normality scan: performed at 18-20 weeks
This scan will provide detailed information of the baby's major organs and any structural abnormalities present. The sex of your baby may also be determined at this point. Your Obstetrician and/or Ultrasonographer will be looking closely at the following:
- Face
- Spine – for any signs of spina bifida.
- Head – to check its shape and brain development.
- Limbs – to check the bones are present and for any signs of club foot.
- Chest and abdomen including kidneys, stomach and bladder.
- Heartbeat and structure of the heart
- Position of the placenta and amount of amniotic fluid present.
Fetal Cardiac scan : performed at 22-23 weeks
This scan is carried out by a paediatric Cardiologist and is used solely to image the baby's heart to identify the presence of congenital defects or cardiac abnormalities.
